Counting Treasure

He sat counting treasure, "Clink, clink, clink."
brought by Dickens, a new way to think.
The treasure amassed, a void to fill;
many try by riches, fame, or thrill.

Or by getting even for loss and pain,
recording lack, resenting others' gain,
see the past as victims or forgiving,
dilemma, survive weight, or of living.

Ebenezer, through Dickens, has spoken,
in many a stony heart evoking,
"Let go! Let go!" of facts now proving,
you think you're owed, the stone removing.

The past, Hooray! It need not hold us,
when freedom comes, no die to mold us,
the stack of fact past can retain,
reach out for joy, release from pain.

Let old Scrooge, as he's done for some,
with Dickens' skill, let freedom come.
Like Christmas' joy learn its readiness,
to live today, and let forgiveness bless.

The weight of expectations remove'
that to give to others warmth and love,
and like the angel or school boy,
from bondage freed, celebrate the joy.
